British Columbia is home to five species of Pacific salmon: Chinook (King), Coho (Silver), Pink, Sockeye, and Chum. Chinook are the largest and most prized, capable of exceeding 30 kilograms. Coho are renowned for their aerial acrobatics and strong fight. Pink salmon are the most abundant and provide excellent sport during peak run years. Sockeye are highly sought for their rich, red flesh. Chum, often underrated, are powerful fighters that reach impressive sizes.
Salmon fishing in BC is a year-round pursuit, though peak opportunities vary by species and location. Chinook are available much of the year in nearshore BC waters, with the best fishing typically from spring through early fall. Coho fishing peaks from August through October.
